There are other factors in play as well as your credit score and down payment. Another thing that you should be thinking of is the common recommendation that all car expenses (taxes, tags, insurance, gas, maintenance, etc.) not exceed 15% of your monthly pay. In some cases, you may wish to go up to 20% but that is a significant amount of you budget even if you don’t have to pay rent or many bills right now.

The only constant in life is change and that said, What will you do if you have a car payment and a year or two or three from now, your situation changes and you have medical bills or you have to pay rent? As a working person, we all should be paying a share of rent or the mortgage. It’s not fair to whomever you’re living with to expect to not pay rent but pay monthly to get a new car. Sooner or later that arrangement will change and buying a new car now and thinking that you won’t have to pay rent during the life of the average 4 year car loan, will create a major problem when that change arises.

When I was 21, I bought a condo just a year after I purchased a car. I bought a reliable used Mustang that got me 252,000 miles before it finally died 11 years later. Had I not bought a reliable used car that I could easily afford while factoring in costs for me to be completely independent, I would not have had my own home at that age (brand new construction) and probably have been renting with 12 roomates or living with parents.

You’re smart, just think a little about your future and how your life will change over the life of any car loan you’re considering and you’ll make the right choice for yourself. Best of luck to you.
